Lucca’s Best Kept Secrets – No. 1

Renee Lenzarini:

Many of our lovely customers often ask me for some travel tips on where to go and what to do in Tuscany. Now while I could talk for hours about her bella Toscana, Lucca is the closest to my heart. My nonni and our family, the Lenzarini family came from the small paesi surrounding Lucca from the Mediavalle to the Garfagnana. Lucca is my favourite Italian city and I’m sure it will soon become one of yours too. I’m about to let you in on my best kept secrets here so grab a pen and take note … you’ll want to write this down, trust me.

No. 1 – Hire a bike and ride around the enchanting walls of Lucca

This is the most fun I’ve had on a bike in years and my number one must do. I’ve rode around le mura both on a push bike and with a rickshaw and couldn’t stop myself giggling. I even managed to convince my nonna to get on one of those things, which was an unforgettable experience. You will find bike rental available in several locations inside the walls. I think that the best time to go is in the afternoon when you can escape the heat and ride around in the shade of the trees … maybe even stop for a siesta.  If you can take your eyes away from the road in front of you for just one moment you will see the magic of Lucca. Botanical gardens, joggers, palazzi, artists and lovers pass you by … Phew, after riding 4.2km twice through, I think it’s time for a gelato.
